Several textile and furniture operations had shut down, taking with them the sense of hope and stability that is vital to any community. Indeed, there was a sense of hopelessness in the air.

(above: Trees Liberty volunteers plant trees at a new habitat for Humanity house in Liberty)

What better time to plant a tree!

Trees NC held a volunteer landscape day at the Liberty Public Library.

Working together with Liberty Public Works, volunteers planted Leyland Cyprus trees and mulched the entire Library property.

Liberty Town Manager Roger Davis played a key role in the project, happy to see a spark of community spirit.

Last year, Trees NC again worked with the Town of Liberty to plan a downtown street scape and garden area - a project funded in part through a grant from the North Carolina Main Street Center.

These days things are looking up in Liberty.

A major manufacturer is opening a large facility that will bring jobs, the main street is lined with small trees, and the formerly empty store fronts are home to several new small businesses.

As a continuation of its dedication to the local community, Trees NC's is expanding the YES! youth environmental service program to Liberty.

Our plan is to work with Liberty Elementary School, scouts and local churches to indentify youth that will benefit from the opportunity to learn green skills (such as tree planting and maintanence) while providing service in their community.

If you would like to be a part of YES! The area, which for years has been the site of ruins from a fire many years ago, is now vibrant with green life and downtown life. The Town of Liberty, in an effort to kickoff a revitalization project downtown, rents the space and has put resources and energy into making it an attractive corner space, as it sits on one of the most trafficked intersections in town. Recently, the town added raised beds filled with pansies and last week cut opening in the existing concrete to plant Chinese Pistachio trees. Kudos to the Town of Liberty for realizing that adding green life to their revitalization project adds new breath to downtown.

Helping Bring Life to Downtown Liberty

The Town of Liberty and the downtown merchants are putting forth great efforts to bring life back to downtown Liberty. TREES NC has partnered with the Liberty community for several projects in the past. For those new to TREES NC, TREES Liberty or just to the Town of Liberty itself, here are some photos of projects we've worked on in the past.

We are very excited at the possibility of collaborating with the Town of Liberty as they participate in the Small Town Main Street program. As the town looks for ways to revitalize the downtown business area, TREES Liberty will look for ways to help revitalize the environment as well. One such area of attention is the Town's corner lot in downtown Liberty. Does this look like it has some planting potential to you? If you are interested in joining forces to make a difference in your local area, please see the Trees Liberty contact page to get involved!

Planting Partners

TREES Liberty is excited to partner with Modern Woodmen of America for tree plantings at the new Habitat for Humanity houses in Liberty.

Richard L.
